Thought we’d try something a little different from squelchy synth noises with the Kinect and decided to see if it was fun playing air Violin ……..and it was :)
Can see this working for the gentler souls that Noise Solution works with or just as a way of contrasting what we can do. Still a very simple patch but I feel we’re starting to get somewhere with this now.
Starting to use the Kinect stuff in a session and seeing if it will work. The reaction from these two was pretty positive. 10 out of 10 (or more) from both of them and massive grins :)
Noise Solution is hoping to be able to bring this type of technology into the work we are doing with those who are vulnerable or hard to reach or who are finding it difficult to operate within the mainstream. Anything that makes it easier for people to make music is, in our opinion, a good thing. To be able to just wave your arm around without even touching anything and to move with music, feel music, react to the music you are making through movement which in turn creates more music has to be a great thing….

Noise Solution - experimenting with our first Kinect Synth. Using the Kinect bar that I bought for £70 to capture our movements we’re using free software to do the rest of the work. The first bit being Kinectar. This translates our movements into midi messages which our Synth can then understand in the computer. Each arm can trigger and/or control sound on 3 axis. Those being Up, Outward(left or right) , and forward. Is fantastic to just play the air and to be using effects mapped to your arms to sculpt the sounds. Sooo much fun. There is an explanatory video earlier in the Noise Solution blog archives about the equipment itself. This was just to show it in action triggering a synth

Noise Solution gains commendation from the High Sheriff of Suffolk
Noise Solution was very happy to be awarded a commendation by the High Sheriff of Suffolk for the work we are doing. We were invited to an event at the cathedral in Bury St Edmunds recently where we were presented with an award and £500 to put toward studio costs.

Who can’t have fun waving your arms about to control music in 3d. This stuff is the future!
Amazingly good fun and well just amazing!
We are a social enterprise using music and technology to engage with marginalised people. Our client group tend to be young people who face educational challenges. They might be in non mainstream education, NEET or involved with the criminal justice system. We work on a one to one basis and have a hugely successful track record of engaging this client group.
We give them the experience and skills that they need to create the music they view as relevant to them, whether it be Grime, Dubstep, Trance, Hip Hop or any other genre. Through this process we are able to successfully engage, significantly increase self esteem, raise aspirations, and provide qualifications.
