Music as therapy

Music is better than any therapy, says 19-year-old Trystran. Trystan has just completed a Noise Solution course with tutor Joe Bailey at Punch Studios in Ipswich. He says that he was quite sceptical and nervous at first because he wasn’t confident that he’d be able to do it. Now, after 10 sessions, he’s planning a career in music production and is looking at college courses either in Ipswich or Bury St Edmunds.

“I was told it was therapy through music but it’s not that. It’s purely music and that’s better than any therapy! I’ve made a lot of wrong decisions but this Noise Solution course is one of the best ones I’ve ever made”. Not only has he worked in a professional studio but also, as part of his Bronze Art Award, went on to teach some of these new-found skills to someone who had never been involved in music before. “Before I came to Noise Solution I’d say I was at about a three out of ten. Now I’m back on track and I feel like I’ve got prospects now. Now I’d say I was a seven or eight.”

He now has the confidence to face what will be an uphill struggle but he has the belief that he can do it restored. Your ideas about how to move forward and build on the course sound great and your offer to support him in this is very kind.

Amazing is a word that 15-year-old Sophie uses a great deal these days. Noise Solution is amazing, her tutor is amazing, the keyboard that he obtained for her through the integrated youth service is amazing, making her own CD was amazing and having her name on Google and You Tube is amazing. But one of the best things is, thanks to Noise Solution’s music award, she has now got an application to start a new college course in September.

For Sophie, this is a real step in the right direction - as she is currently not at school. “I really wanted to play the piano and I was shown how to do that on my first session. I then went on to learn and record a song by Adele and another by Elton John.” She was also inspired through recording her Noise Solution progress on a blog and is now setting-up her own blog to continue the good work.

Creating positive change

Rob is a highly talented young musician who’s been given a new lease of life by Noise Solution. Previously he had been unable to leave his Bury St Edmunds home, couldn’t go to college to finish his music degree and found that whatever therapy he tried just didn’t make a difference. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter had been housebound for two or three years and was suffering from social anxiety disorder. “I went through all different kinds of therapy and nothing seemed to work and then I heard about Noise Solution.”

Ten sessions later Rob is now volunteering on a regular basis for Community Service Volunteer Media Clubhouse, in Ipswich, and is trying his hand at computer games journalism for Villa House Media which reaches out to help people across Europe. “My tutor came to me for the first session and we used my own recording equipment. Then gradually as the weeks went by we moved to the recording studio. I was really scared to begin with but it was a really positive experience. Rob (pictured) says, “We picked a selection of my songs and then worked on four or five and ended up recording them. “My tutor arranged the volunteering work for me and I’ve really enjoyed it. “It’s all made such a difference to me that I now want to go back and finish my degree.”

In a letter of thanks Viv, Rob’s mum, says, “To watch Rob struggle with social anxiety disorder for two and a half years has been heart-wrenching. “Your wonderful mentoring skills have inspired Rob and most importantly rekindled his love of music.”

Just about to finish a set of sessions where Noise Solution has been working with a learner to create a radio show as part of their silver arts award. As a by product of this process this young man has generated over 5000 hits and attracted over 80 people following his youtube channel channel. This is what he had to say about the experience

Words cannot describe mate – learning all these things being able to apply them and seeing the result…it means I can express myself with my music, Noise Solution has helped me…being able to use the skills Ive learnt to become a musician it means I’ve been collaborating, giving adice on production and mixing in the Bronny community – it’s taken me further in that community. It’s given me a direction in life. I feel confident I can take what I’ve learn’t and go further with it..

Asked to grade how he felt about himself and situation prior to Noise Solution he gave a low score pre Noise Solution of 4 and Post Noise Solution of 9.5……………… Here’s the radio show

Here are resource links for Music tech conference talk

I’m giving a short talk about Noise Solution and as part of that some of the work we are doing using games controllers, specifically Kinect, at the music and technology conference in Norwich. I thought it would be a good idea to provide links to all the software that makes the kinect work we do possible so here they are

You need a number of bits of software to make this work and here is what we have chosen to use.

You need a DAW or digital audio workstation. We use Reaper for the following reasons

You need something to translate the kinects information into something your DAW will understand (i.e.midi)

Here is the software written by Chris Vick that takes the camera’s information and transfers it into midi information that your DAW of choice can then use to control soft synths or effects units.

The third bit of software will be redundant within the next few weeks as the software is about to receive an update where this functionality will be replaced but for now for OSX I suggest you use

(disclaimer - I only use a mac so have no experience of setting this up with a PC - however as stated it shouldn’t be an issue very shortly)

A £200 injection of cash and an idea two years ago has led to a non grant funded sustainable social enterprise employing a number of people, turning over nearly £40,000 so far this year and most importantly providing really fantastic social outcomes for a whole heap of people.

One excited learner and The Verve

Meanwhile 13-year-old Charlie (pictured below) has been praised for her composition, “Fresh Start.” Everyone at Noise Solution creates a blog to record their journey so that parents and friends follow their progress.

For Charlie there was the added thrill to have Simon Tong, of The Verve, saying her composition was “brilliant”.

Charlie’s tutor didn’t mention to start with but It just so happens that he had toured recently and a number of bands one of which had a member of The Verve in it, knowing Charlie was a fan, he popped him an email and asked if he could have a look at her blog. Here’s what he had to say.

“Norwegian Wood was one of the first songs I learnt to play on guitar .I bet you can do a better job of singing it than the chap in the clip (ha)! Your lyrics sound interesting, would love to hear them in a finished song.”

Arts Awards for our clients….

In the last year 16 Noise Solution clients have received bronze Arts Awards and 3 have received silver Awards (level 2 G.C.S.E equivalent). Arts Awards are meaningful qualifications which can be used to build up credits towards a college place. Read about the blogs the students build to create their unique online portfolios and why we think this is a really important part of our work [here] and see an example of that work in action [here].

To gain an Arts Award students have to produce a portfolio of their own work, to review a live performance and to plan and teach to others some of what they’ve learnt. As an example you can see this blog [here].

Getting an Award is a really positive experience:

“Jake now knows what success feels like and he has his blog and certificate to remind him and to be able to say to others ‘I may not have got any formal qualifications at school, but I got this, and this is what I had to do to get it’” Jane Tyers, Assistant Head Teacher, King Edwards School, Bury St Edmunds.

We’ve worked hard with the Arts Awards body to develop their understanding of our methodology and to enable them to use our client’s blogs as an online portfolio, so we’re to have had this feedback:

“Using blogs and online portfolios has been utilised to full effect here. Fantastic examples of utilising digital media as a platform for personalised evidence and real time charting of progress. The young people fully engage with their artistic practice and it is shown well through MP3 and video clips.”
